Bit of a catch up.

January 21st, 2008 by Greg

OK its been about 10 days since my last post so lets try and bring you up to date.

I found that the Yzoo database replication was getting out of sync. I had set up 4 databases all replicating with each other in rotation, ie dbase1 -> dbase2, dbase2->dbase3, dbase3->dbase4 and dbase4->dbase1 then all the scripts would use the database with the lowest server load. In theory it should work, in practice it worked poorly. It appeared the replication itself on such a large database with hundreds of updates every minute was in itself causing a high server load.

I decided to reorganise (again), now dbase1 and dbase2 replicated with each other, and also dbase2 replicated its data to dbase3. I then modified the scripts so all lookups where done on dbase3 only, and any updates where then done on either dbase1 or dbase2 whichever had the lowest load. dbase4 is now used for two other sites listed below.

This appears to have had a dramatic effect, BUT during the process I wiped out the database in my mistake.

So I had to use the latest database backup that I had, not good as that was 10 days old:(

Ok problem fixed, but then came a kick in the balls. The site was once again dropped from the Google Serps and within 24 hours page impressions dropped to about 15% of the norm. I don’t know if this was just a glitch but I made a few minor changes and the site is gradually being reindexed, traffic is at about50% of what it was a few days earlier.

Amongst all of the above I worked on a new site YzooMail which is offering free email to users aswell as the option of accessing POP email from their normal email address if they wish. It’s a slow start but we are seeing new members join on a daily basi. Please note tho we do not tollerate spamming and/or scamming via the site and users found sending such emails will have their accounts deleted.

My next project that I am working on is YzooBlog a free Blog hosting service. The script is installed, I am currently working on the templates and pluggins but feel free to take a look and let me know what you think. ALL comments welcome.
