Theiving 123reg.co.uk

October 1st, 2007 by Greg

123reg.co.uk is apparently ‘the UK’s largest domain name registrar, web hosting and email provider’ and was voted ‘Best Web Host 2006′ by the readers of Webuser.

I’ve used them for years to register my .UK domains and have not had a problem until a few days ago. On Friday I tried renewing 2 domains via the 123reg.co.uk control panel, renewing two domains for two years cost £13.58 (about $27 USD). Everything went through as it should but I noticed that after the renewel process had completed and my card had been charged both domains still showed as ‘due for renewel’

I double checked my bank account and confirmed that the £13.58 had been charged to my card. OK so I thought this may just be a technical delay. I then checked the ‘account activity’ and found the invoice for the renewal. To my amazement, although it shows that it has been paid, it was for just £6.79 for just one of the two domains.

I then found the 08712309525 telephone and gave them a call. The kid on the other end of the phone called me a lier, stating that I had just paid the £6.79 for the one domain and that is all they charged my account. He said I would need to show HIM my bank statement to prove otherwise. This wound me up and when I asked to speak to a manager he cut me off.

I phoned again and spoke to someone else who appeared to understand the situation better and said he would pass it to the head office in London and it would be resolved by the end of the day. Well guess what it wasn’t. This morning both domains are still showing that they are due to expire in the next few weeks, there is still just the one invoice showing in the ‘account activity’ for just one domain and there is no response to my question via their support site which i eventually got to work.

This has totally trashed any confidence I had in 123reg.co.uk and I have now transferred my domain names to daily.co.uk who apparently where set up and are run by those that created 123reg.co.uk.

I will get my money back from 123reg one way or another, even if it means me paying them a visit at the Nottingham address as I am not that far away.

Reading the reviews at Web-Hosting-Top.com I am not alone, and many have seen a decline in service since Pipex Communications Ltd took over.

My advice now, is stay away from123reg.co.uk, they are uncontactable and unreliable.
